Bhutan Standards Bureau & Department of Agriculture Launches National Standard for Combine Harvesters to Promote Safe and Efficient Agricultural Mechanization

The Agriculture Machinery and Technology Centre (AMTC), Department of Agriculture (DoA), in collaboration with the Bhutan Standards Bureau (BSB) officially launched the Bhutan Standard for Combine Harvester on 11 June 2026, marking a significant milestone in strengthening agricultural mechanization and quality assurance in the country.

The standard was developed following a proposal initiated by AMTC and through a consultative process involving members of the Technical Sub-Committee, government agencies, private sector stakeholders, and technical experts. The initiative aims to establish minimum requirements for the safety, performance, and quality of combine harvesters operating in Bhutan.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Director, DoA highlighted the importance of standards in promoting safe and efficient agricultural practices, improving machinery reliability, and supporting Bhutan’s efforts to modernize its agriculture sector.

The newly launched standard provides technical specifications and requirements related to machine safety, operational performance, grain loss assessment, testing procedures, etc. It will serve as an important reference for farmers, machinery suppliers, importers, testing agencies, and policymakers.

AMTC, which served as the lead proponent and technical contributor in the standard development process, emphasized that the standard will facilitate future machinery testing and certification services while ensuring that agricultural machinery introduced into the country meets established quality benchmarks.

The launch reflects Bhutan’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable agricultural mechanization, enhancing food security, and supporting the transformation of the agriculture sector through innovation and technology.
