Agriculture Officials meet in Punakha for the 13 Five Year Plan Consultation Meeting

The 13 Five Year Plan (FYP) consultation meeting was organized at Punakha (6-8 March 2023). The meeting was chaired by the Director of the Department of Agriculture and attended by specialist heads of the Agriculture Research and Development Centre (ARDC) and, Central Programs, Dzongkhag Agriculture Officer’s, Commodity Coordinators, focals and core working group of the Department for the 13 FYP.

The Chief of the Agriculture Research and Innovation Division welcomed all the participants to the 13 FYP consultation meeting and shared the meeting’s objective to finalize the 13 FYP meeting.

The Director of the Department chaired the three-day meeting. He highlighted the importance to discuss and come to a common understanding among agencies under the Department in his opening remarks. The chair also encouraged participants to take the opportunity to deliberate on current issues that agriculture is confronting and channel agriculture plans towards a developed economy. In addition, the participants were apprised on the new changes undergoing as a p art of the national reform particularly the changes under the Department of Agriculture. Further, the forum was advised to accept the changes especially when the current business as usual scenarios is not resulting in positive outcomes. The chair reiterated on two things to keep in mind while formulating the 13 FYP to transition to a “Developed Bhutan” i.e., to focus on high value commodities in order to generate revenue and also have specials plans for essential items with pertinent food security importance.

There are 5 projects proposed by the Department as a part of the 13 FYP (2024 – 2029) and long-term plan (2029 – 2034). The three-day meeting will look at finalizing the 13 FYP for the Department of Agriculture towards the end of this month.
